Discover Jacksonville’s Downtown Historic Churches This Weekend

November 30th, 2009 · No Comments

St Andrews Church

If you’ve never toured downtown Jacksonville’s historic churches, you’re in for a surprise. This Saturday, Dec. 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. the Downtown Historic Church Tour will take visitors inside 10 of the city’s most historic sanctuaries. Guides will be stationed at each church to highlight the architectural and historical significance of the building. The tours begin and end at the Main Library and visitors can walk or use the complimentary trolley service provided along the tour route.

For a complete list of churches on the tour, visit www.downtownjacksonville.org. In addition to touring the churches, visitors will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Wayne Wood’s 30-minute slideshow on Downtown Jacksonville’s history. Members of MetroJacksonville’s editorial staff and contributors will also share their knowledge of downtown during the event.

To get in the holiday spirit, stop by the Junior League of Jacksonville’s Annual Festival of Trees on display at the Main Library and the Rotary’s Gingerbread House Extravaganza on display at Old St. Andrews for Saturday only.

Tickets for the Downtown Historic Church Tour are $5 per person and can be purchased at www.downtownjacksonville.org or at the Jacksonville Main Library the day of the event (cash only). Twenty percent of all ticket sales will benefit the Emergency Services and Homeless Coalition. More information is available by calling (904) 451-3344 or visiting www.downtownjacksonville.org.

We hope you take advantage of this tour and learn some history about the First Coast’s most sacred sanctuaries!
