Former Pittsburg Mayor Tom Murphy was the keynote speaker at a recent ULI program titled “Infrastructure 2010: Investment Imperative with a focus on water – the hidden infrastructure problem.”
Are you conserving water? According to the program, here are the current challenges we face as a community:
- We take our water for granted
- Demand is outstripping supply
- We have aging pipes
- We fail to conserve
- Pollution
- We lose 6 billion gallons of water per day due to leaks
- 14 metro cities are facing water challenges
- St. Johns River is in trouble
- The bottom line is we need to manage our water supply
Here are some lessons we can learn from Australia’s water conservation efforts:
- Look at water as a lifestyle
- Capture storm and rainwater
- Recycle wastewater
- Conserve
- Plant crops that require less water and landscape appropriately
- Utilize new irrigation methods
- Moderate household consumption
- Fix worn out pipes
Everyone can make a difference in conserving our valuable water. What are you doing? Tell us below and let’s all do our part!
