Cedar Bay: A Unique Sense of Community

August 19th, 2014 · Leave a Comment

The riverfront community of Cedar Bay is a desirable place, with a lush and inviting entrance, well-maintained lawns and landscapes and friendly waves from people on the street. Residents take great pride in their homes and in their neighborhood, as well as pride in the wider area around the community.

Cedar Bay and its residents have been participating in the Adopt-A-Road program and are responsible for monthly litter control for a one-mile stretch of Cedar Bay Road, the main road fronting the entrance to Cedar Bay. Each month, residents meet to don gloves and safety vests, and tote orange garbage bags, as they walk the winding, rural avenue near their community.

Once they are finished, they are treated to a catered lunch at the Cedar Bay Community Park or GreenPointe Homes’ model home, depending on the weather.

“The Adopt-A-Road program has been very popular with our residents,” said Vicki Bratvold, president of GreenPointe Realty, which helps organize the clean-up. “It has fostered a wonderful spirit of cooperation and pride, not only for the Cedar Bay community, but also for the surrounding community. Residents enjoy giving back, as well as getting to know each other better.”

The Adopt-A-Road program was founded in 1986 by Keep Jacksonville Beautiful. Dedicated citizen volunteers, like those in Cedar Bay, sign an agreement to adopt their roadway – typically about a mile and with a mix of both residential and commercial properties – and to commit to holding a cleanup once a month, in addition to disposing of the collected litter properly. Trash bags, reflective safety vests and disposable gloves are provided by Keep Jacksonville Beautiful.

The monthly get-together, with a larger purpose than simply a social function, has become very meaningful for residents in Cedar Bay.
