European Influences at The John Gorrie a condominium

June 25th, 2013 · Leave a Comment

The historic neighborhood of Riverside Avondale is known for its diverse and extensive collection of architectural styles ranging from Queen Anne to Prairie to Colonial Revival and beyond. The Mediterranean Revival Style is particularly prevalent throughout the neighborhood, and notably displayed at The John Gorrie a condominium, Jacksonville’s premier condo community. John Gorrie resident Javier Ruiz was drawn to the condominium for this very reason.

“I am originally from Spain and now a naturalized U.S. citizen. I moved to The John Gorrie because it reminded me of the building where my parents live in Spain,” Ruiz said. “Plus, as someone who grew up in Europe, the neighborhood seems to me a lot more fun and eclectic than your usual condo development or suburban residential area.”

Residents of The John Gorrie can walk to nearby parks, restaurants and shopping, and enjoy numerous festivals and markets throughout the year. Five Points, a trendy nearby entertainment district, offers nightlife options and Downtown Jacksonville is a short drive away.

Ruiz, who works in Nuclear Medicine at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, also enjoys the short commute to and from his job.

“Working at a hospital can be arduous and stressful. Being able to hop in your car and be home in five minutes is a godsend,” he said. “And as a nuclear medicine professional, I LOVE the fallout shelter plaque at the entrance of The John Gorrie, with its yellow and black radioactive sign. It’s silly, I know, but I think it’s really cool.”

The John Gorrie is located in close proximity to a number of medical facilities including St. Vincent’s Hospital, Baptist Medical Center, Nemours and more.

Other favorites of Ruiz’s include his home’s huge windows, wooden floors, designer cabinetry and modern appliances. He also appreciates how elegant, quiet and solid the building feels and that each unit is distinctive in its own way.

“The classic design of the building is very welcoming and has given me a chance to interact with my neighbors. Everyone I have met so far is really nice. It’s a great community.”
