Six months ago, Jacksonville professional Milan Velimirovic began thinking about buying a new home. Although he owned a home in the Southside area, the architect and Keiser University computer instructor frequently visited the neighborhoods of Riverside and Avondale. He enjoyed the historic community’s flavor and wanted an environment that would free him from many of the responsibilities of traditional home ownership. He found this, and more, at The John Gorrie a condominium.

“For 16 years, I spent every weekend working on my home, making improvements,” Velimirovic said. “Although I lived on the Southside, I frequented the area and I knew about The John Gorrie. I thought to myself, ‘Why not buy a condo? All I’ll need is a key.'”

Velimirovic recently purchased and moved into a two-bedroom, two-bath unit at The John Gorrie. His third floor condominium overlooks Myra Street. Velimirovic is just steps from one of his favorite spots, Bold Bean Coffee Roasters on Stockton Street. He appreciates the vibrant fabric of the community and plans to live at The John Gorrie for a long time.

“It is absolutely wonderful living here,” Velimirovic said. There are artists, architects and so many interesting people who reside here. My previous neighborhood never provided the same level of interaction with others that I enjoy here at The John Gorrie. The environment is very fulfilling, motivating and inspirational.”

The former homeowner was thrilled to purchase a residence with new appliances, CaesarStone countertops and hardwood floors. Some of the condominium’s features that attracted him to his home were original wood beams on the 12-foot ceilings, concrete walls and expansive windows.

His professional design understanding and experiences heightens his appreciation of the extensive renovation and restoration of the former junior high school that was undertaken by Delores Barr Weaver. Velimirovic also loves that his residence and the building’s common spaces have an urban feel and include elements from its former use as a school.

The John Gorrie offers studios, one- and two-bedroom residences and two-story townhomes. Residents have access to a custom fitness center, elevators, private gated parking, a resident reading room with Wi-Fi Internet access and a private courtyard.

In addition to being in walking distance of neighborhood shops, restaurants and offices, residents are also in close proximity to the St. Johns River and a variety of beautiful parks.
