One of Jacksonville’s newest doctors has found his dream home in a community named in honor of a celebrated physician.

David Michel recently graduated from Texas A&M University College of Medicine and relocated from Texas to Northeast Florida to begin an orthopedic surgery residency at UF Health Jacksonville. Initially, Michel wasn’t sure if he was going to rent or buy a home in Jacksonville, but he knew he wanted to live near the hospital.

Before his residency began, Michel made a quick house-hunting trip to the area. While he looked at several homes, he found what he wanted and more at The John Gorrie a condominium.

“My Realtor (Allison Steilberg of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Network Realty) showed me around, gave me the history and got me hooked on the building,” Michel said. “Also, the thought of living in a building whose namesake was a famous physician and inventor is pretty cool, too.”

Designed by distinguished Jacksonville architects Benjamin and Greeley, The John Gorrie a condominium is named for a physician who is considered the father of air conditioning and refrigeration for inventing the ice-making machine in the mid-1800s.

Every condominium in The John Gorrie is unique, and residents enjoy the story behind each home, which reflects its use during the buildings’ tenure as John Gorrie Junior High School. The school, which sat vacant for many years, was purchased in 2009 by J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver and transformed into 68 historic residences with contemporary amenities.

Michel was drawn to The John Gorrie for many reasons including the exposed brick wall, expansive windows providing abundant natural light, proximity to his workplace and that the residence was move-in ready with no additional work needed.

“I was really hooked by my residence – it was the first one I saw in the building and I subconsciously used it as a measuring stick for all of the properties I viewed for two days after seeing it,” Michel said. “The 12-foot ceilings, the beautifully finished kitchen, the 8-foot windows spanning the whole unit – what’s not to love?”

The vibrancy of the Riverside area and the community’s proximity to work, downtown, parks, shops and restaurants also offered great appeal.

“I like the community’s proximity to everything,” Michel said. “I’m close to Avondale, downtown, Five Points, and everything in Riverside is basically within walking distance.”

Michel also enjoys the community and his neighbors at The John Gorrie.

“My neighbors have been great – always willing to lend a hand…or a drill,” he said. “And, I’m still meaning to get over to the gym!”

The John Gorrie offers studios, one- and two-bedroom residences and two-story townhomes priced from the low $100,000s. For more information about how you can be part of The John Gorrie community, call (904) 383-3688 or visit www.TheJohnGorrie.com.
