What’s Happening in Northeast Florida

January 3rd, 2014 · Leave a Comment

Welcome to 2014! In the new year, we resolve to get you out of the house more often for fun, exciting, family-friendly and cultural events, such as $5 Fridays at the Museum of Science and History (MOSH) in Downtown Jacksonville.

In addition to gaining access to MOSH for only $5, the Downtown museum on the Southbank offers Cosmic Concert laser light shows every Friday night for only $5 (plus $1 for laser glasses) every hour from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tickets are available at http://www.moshplanetarium.org or at the door.

As temperatures dip, try WinterFEST at Adventure Landing – Jacksonville’s best effort to recreate the cold-weather benefits our Northern friends enjoy.

The park transforms its Shipwreck Island and wave pool areas into a cozy alpine experience, complete with an outdoor skating rink, a 130-foot ice slide, light displays, s’mores roasting – and a nightly snowfall! (Don’t ask how they do that!)

WinterFEST lasts through Jan. 12, and includes Friday, Jan. 3, from 2 p.m. – 10 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 4, 2 p.m. – 10 p.m.; and Sunday, Jan. 5, 2 p.m. -10 p.m.

For more information and pricing, visit Adventure Landing’s website.

For those who prefer the indoors this time of year, check out the Cummer Museum’s “Art of Empathy” exhibit that runs through Feb. 16.

The exhibit showcases a masterwork in the Cummer’s permanent collection, “Mother of Sorrows” (c. 1470.) It is one of only five known works by the Master of the Stötteritz Altar and was declared the “most important discovery in early German painting” by art historian Colin Eisler.

While you’re there, browse through the museum’s other great art, including important Florida works and painting by Hudson River artists.
