What’s Happening in Northeast Florida

August 1st, 2014 · Leave a Comment

When the heat index approaches 100, it’s time to seek cool entertainment options. And what’s cooler than the Rat Pack?

On Saturday, Aug. 2, the Alhambra Theatre on Beach Boulevard hosts the Rat Pack Tribute Show – the first of Alhambra’s 2014 Music Series featuring music of Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra.

The Alhambra After Dark Music & Supper Club performance begins Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. and repeats on Sunday, Aug. 3 with a noon matinee in the air-conditioned theater.

Tickets for dinner and a show are $59, and are available on the Alhambra’s website.

By the time the sun goes down, you might try to venture into Northeast Florida’s great outdoors on Saturday, Aug. 2 for the Downtown Lights Up Your Summer Nights event that includes fireworks.

The free event, which is presented by The Jacksonville Landing, gets underway at the cool hour of 8 p.m., and includes live music by Something Distant, drink specials and beautiful views of the St. Johns River.

The Bang! Pow! Pow! Awwwwwww! gets underway at 9:45 p.m.

For more information, visit The Jacksonville Landing online.

While we’re talking cool, you might want to check out Maxwell – the multi-Platinum-selling, soul star – who performs Sunday, Aug. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at The Times-Union Center for Performing Arts in the Downtown area.

Maxwell is perhaps best known for his impeccable vocals, his connection to the audience, and the sheer physicality of his performances – with hits like his Gold song “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder.)”

Tickets begin at $36. Visit JaxEvents.com for more information.

Finally, if you say “to heck with the heat, I want some meat,” there’s always the 2nd Annual Jerk Food Festival on Sunday, Aug. 3 at Metropolitan Park in Downtown, beginning at noon.

For $10 (or $5 with a food or school supplies donation), you get to experience live performances, arts and crafts, kids fun with face painters, clowns and bounce houses – and, of course, great food!

There will also be a hot pepper eating contest, and a jerk wing eating face-off.
