What’s Happening in Northeast Florida

Night of Lights

So get used to it – you’re going to be spending much of the next several weeks celebrating the holidays. And that’s a good thing, right?

The Night of Lights – an awesome illumination of America’s Oldest City – begins on Saturday, Nov. 23, igniting a glow on St. Augustine’s streets, rooftops and trees that lasts until Jan. 31.

On Saturday, the event will begin with holiday music, and the lighting of the Christmas tree in the Plaza de la Constitucion.

National Geographic in 2011 and 2012 named it one of the 10 best holiday lighting displays in the world! So who are you to miss it?

Festival of Trees

And this year’s Festival of Trees will take place again at the St. Johns County Convention Center at World Golf Village, kicking off with a grand opening celebration on Saturday, Nov. 23 and running through Thursday, Dec. 5.

The donations and proceeds will benefit two local charities – The St. Augustine Record’s Empty Stocking Fund and the United Way of St. Johns County.

Visitors can stroll through the displays and vote for their favorites by way of a $1 minimum donation and also may purchase entries through the event’s silent auction.  Online voting and donations will also be accepted at www.WorldGolfHallofFame.org. Call 904.940.4157 for more information about the event or making a donation.

Beethoven's "Eroica"

Looking for a little culture? The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra performs Beethoven’s “Eroica” on Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23. Both performances begin at 8 p.m. at The Times-Union Center.

Beethoven dedicated “Eroica” to Napoleon but later scribbled his name off the front page when Napoleon proclaimed himself emperor. Amid fears of an impending war, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ cantata makes a plea for peace, using text from Walt Whitman, a political speech and the Bible.

And these days, can’t we all benefit from a little more peace of mind?

Fall Food Festival at the Landing

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop by the area in front of The Jacksonville Landing beginning at 11 a.m. for the Fall Food Festival, featuring goodies from Landing restaurants and more than a dozen Jax Truckies food trucks.

There also will be raffles, live music, giveaways and more – all benefiting the United Way of Northeast Florida.
