A Cure for the “Nothing to Do” Blues

Is the summer heat bumming you out? Well, here are some unique events happening in Northeast Florida this week to help you beat the heat and the summer blues. Get out there and have some fun!

Friday, July 29 – The Downtown and Riverside Trolley Pub Crawl, hosted by MetroJacksonville.com, will kick off from two locations, Walker’s Wine Bar (Riverside) and the Jacksonville Landing (Downtown) at 6:30 p.m. Your $10 admission gets you two free drink tickets, complimentary trolley transportation, free cover at any participating venue and the opportunity to win great prizes from area merchants. Ticket sales are capped at 300 people, so make sure you buy your tickets early!

Saturday, July 30Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Aquafina present the 4th annual Wal-Mart Back to School Fest from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jacksonville Landing. Dozens of vendors will give away more than 200,000 additional free school supplies and live entertainment will take place on the riverfront stage throughout the event. Wal-Mart’s optical staff will provide free vision screenings to all children and will assist in providing glasses for those who need them. Entrance and all activities are free and open to the public.

Sunday, July 31The Florida Theatre presents Summer Movie Classics featuring “The China Syndrome.” Take a break from the heat and enjoy a classic flick in the cool darkness and historical ambience of the Florida Theatre. The movie starts at 2 p.m. and tickets are $7.50. Make it an evening out by presenting your movie ticket at participating restaurants for special discounts.

Tuesday, August 2 – Bring the family for a night of laughs with Classic Silent Comedies at 5 Points Theatre. The three classic silent comedies, “Coney Island,” “Triple Trouble” and “Curses” star legendary comedians Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Fatty Arbuckle and Harold Lloyd. The films will be accompanied by LIVE music, popcorn and laughs. The kid-friendly show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $10.

Wednesday, August 3 – Find out what’s cooking at Art Walk! Produced by Downtown Vision, Inc., First Wednesday Art Walk is a free, self-guided tour that combines visual and live art, engaging events and more in the core of Downtown Jacksonville. August’s “Now We’re Cooking” theme will highlight the culinary arts of Downtown with a sneak preview of Eat Up Downtown. Don’t miss the showing of the Oscar-winning animated film “Ratatouille,” playing at Snyder Memorial Church at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
