Chief Foreign Correspondent Lara Logan Opens The Florida Forum Series

October 26th, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Lara Logan, renowned journalist and chief foreign correspondent for CBS News’ 60 Minutes, recently shared highlights of her journalism career during an appearance at the Florida Forum Speaker Series, produced by The Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

Detailing her most exciting and intimate moments during interviews with diplomats, soldiers on the front lines, military leaders and terrorists, Logan’s stories captivated the more than 1,000 patrons attending the Oct. 17 event.

An award-winning reporter and journalist, she has earned prominence among the world’s best foreign correspondents through her notable 60 Minutes contributions. From reporting on the front lines of the battlefield in Afghanistan, to infiltrating terrorist strongholds and befriending soldiers injured in war, Logan emphasized the importance of journalism’s basic principle: getting to the truth of the story.

“I’m a reporter because I’m nosy,” Logan informed the audience. “I want to know the truth. I don’t want to be the foreign correspondent that knows everything because I don’t. That is why I’m in the situation – the interview – asking questions. I am the vessel so people can tell their stories and share their experiences.”

Logan credits her childhood days growing up in South Africa under Apartheid for instilling in her the importance of truth, respect and understanding.

“I go into situations and I listen. I want to learn why people think and believe the way they do so I can share it in my interviews,” she told the audience.

Logan also toured Wolfson Children’s Hospital during her visit to Jacksonville and spent time with Nathan Wood, the evening’s patient profile, and his family. Wood was diagnosed at 20 weeks’ gestations with a rare congenital heart defect.

The Florida Forum Speaker Series continues Jan. 28 with acclaimed actor, writer, producer and director Bryan Cranston. Known for his television portrayal of Walter White on AMC’s Breaking Bad, Cranston has earned four Emmy® Awards, four SAG Awards and a Golden Globe Award.

On Mar. 27, pro football Hall of Famer and NFL coach Tony Dungy will round out the 2018-2019 series at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts.

Tickets for the remaining speakers are available for purchase to benefit Wolfson Children’s Hospital and the newly announced NICU funding target. Tickets start at $167 for general seating, with the opportunity to purchase ticket packages to attend the reception with the speaker after the lecture. Patrons under age 30 may purchase Young Subscriber tickets for $100 each.

The series is presented by Wells Fargo, Florida Blue and Landstar, and many valued supporters of The Women’s Board. For more information and to purchase tickets for Bryan Cranston and Tony Dungy, visit The Women’s Board website at www.womensboardwolfsonchildrenshospital.com.
