Downtown Jacksonville Continues Improvement Projects, Welcomes Business Growth.

July 6th, 2010 · Leave a Comment

The development and growth in downtown Jacksonville continues to flourish! Here is a recent update on the new and exciting things happening downtown provided by the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission (JEDC).

Friendship Fountain Park’s redevelopment and improvement plans are underway. JBC Planning and Engineering, LLC recently completed design drawing and bid specifications for the $3.1 million project. Improvement plans include replacement of the broken concrete areas surrounding the fountain with natural grass surfaces, adding seating opportunities for passive recreation and installing new sidewalks, lighting and trees. Construction is anticipated to begin in late summer and take approximately eight to 10 months to complete.

Metropolitan Park Improvements – The JEDC is in the process of evaluating design consultants for Phase One of the Metropolitan Park improvements. Phase One improvements will focus on the west end of the current park area.

The 2010 Jacksonville Jazz Festival was a huge hit with more than 150,000 people in attendance at the three-day event, which took part right in the heart of downtown for the second year in a row.

The urban core just got another boost with the recent move of Burro Bags, makers of custom messenger bags made from recycled billboard material, relocating their operation to 228 E. Forsyth St.

Forty-two teams participated in the 2010 Jacksonville 48-Hour Film Project which concluded downtown on June 20.  Each team had 48 hours to write, produce, shoot and edit a short film, after being given the genre at the June 18 kick-off. An awards ceremony for the event will be held on July 10 at the Florida Theatre.

Downtown continues its amazing growth process towards bigger and better things! Make a point to get downtown and get involved!
