England-Thims & Miller, Inc. (ETM) recently announced that Dr. Ryan Shamet, PhD, PE, Assistant Professor in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of North Florida (UNF), was their first ETM Summer Faculty in Residence. His residency term ran from June to August 2024. ETM’s Faculty in Residence program with UNF will continue each summer through 2026.

“UNF is renowned for its commitment to academic excellence and its strong emphasis on experiential learning. By partnering with UNF, we are aligning our internship program with one of the leading educational institutions in the region, providing students with exceptional professional development opportunities” said Hugh Mathews, CEO of ETM.

Dr. Shamet worked directly with the 29 students who participated in ETM’s internship program. Throughout the residency, he offered expert guidance and support to ETM’s student interns, helping them achieve their professional goals. Dr. Shamet intends to leverage the insights gained from the ETM and UNF partnership to align the University’s curriculum with real-world applications, ensuring that the skills taught in the classroom facilitate a smooth transition to professional careers.

“The ETM Faculty in Residence program is an experience that has allowed me to step outside of the classroom and gain working knowledge of how best to apply what the university teaches to real world projects,” stated Dr. Shamet. It has proven to be immensely beneficial for my own professional development, which in turn will ultimately better serve our students through developing instructional content with the goal of bridging the gap between academia and practice.”

ETM offers internships to qualifying college students pursuing degrees in civil engineering, transportation engineering, planning, landscape architecture, geomatics, and GIS. Each intern is partnered with a seasoned mentor who provides expert guidance on how to apply their academic knowledge to the infrastructure and development projects that are shaping the landscape of our communities throughout the state.

If a student excels while interning at ETM, they may be invited to join the ETM Accelerator Program. Founded in 2019, the Accelerator Program provides a unique opportunity for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students to participate in enhanced experiential learning to accelerate their professional development. To date, more than 80 students have completed ETM’s internship program.

ETM is actively accepting applications for their internship program at their corporate offices in Jacksonville, Orlando, and Ormond Beach, and their dedicated internship office in Gainesville for University of Florida students. For information on how to apply, email [email protected].
