HabiJax Announces New Members and Officers for 2013-2014 Board of Directors

Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville (HabiJax) has named four new members to its Board of Directors. The board currently has 26 members who are tasked with promoting the mission and vision of HabiJax – to build and renovate high-quality affordable housing and advocate of behalf of those in need and to serve as a partner and catalyst to create safe and sustainable communities. They also act in a governance role for the organization.

Then and Now – The Transformation of The John Gorrie a condominium

It wasn’t long ago – less than two decades, in fact – that hundreds of students were receiving an education at John Gorrie Junior High School in the Riverside neighborhood. Named after famous Floridian Dr. John Gorrie, the inventor of air conditioning and the first ice machine, the John Gorrie school opened its doors in 1923 and permanently closed them to students in 1997.

As the chill of autumn arrives, thoughts naturally turn to dipping battered foods into hot oil ­­– and then perhaps walking or running off those calories. Fortunately, the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair ­began on Nov. 6 and runs through Nov. 17, featuring a plethora of deep-fried goodies, as well as traditional agricultural displays, thrilling rides, carnival games and performances by some well-known entertainers. The week of events also includes the Veterans Day Parade, author Michael Lewis at Florida Forum, and McKenzie's Run 5K.

JAX Chamber Hosts 11th Annual Military Appreciation Luncheon

Nearly 1,000 people attended the Military Appreciation Luncheon hosted by the JAX Chamber today at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. An annual Chamber tradition, the luncheon brings the region’s business community together to recognize the brave men and women from all branches of the local military community, including active duty, reservists, veterans and their families.

Zillow: Jacksonville’s Real Estate Market on the Rebound

After a significant drop from 2009 to 2011, the Jacksonville real estate market is back on the rise. Zillow’s Home Value Index indicates that home values in the area had increased 16 percent this summer over 2012’s prices. Further, 54.2 percent of homes in Jacksonville were selling for more than its original purchase prices.
