A Cure for the “Nothing to Do” Blues

Looking for a cure for the Nothing to Do Blues? Here are some unique events happening in Northeast Florida this week.

Saturday, Aug. 6 and Sunday, Aug. 7 – The Amelia Island Sunsplash Music Festival benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project will feature live bands and DJs. Family-friendly entertainment includes an instrument petting zoo, a station for rock star hairdos and tattoos, face painting, arts and crafts, sandcastle building, watermelon eating contest, and a ‘paint party’ where kids can discover their inner Picasso.

Sunday, Aug. 7 – Calling all Deadheads! The 16th Annual Chinacat Sunflower Festival will once again pay tribute to Jerry Garcia and local kite maker Rick O’Shea. The free event will be held from 4:20 to 9 p.m. at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum. Entertainment is family and kid friendly and will feature a drum circle, electric and acoustic Dead-influenced bands, hula hooping, and kite flying. Bring a picnic and enjoy an evening on “Shakedown Street.”

Tuesday, Aug. 9 – Enjoy the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens for only $2 per person for general admission. The Zoo is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and tickets are sold until 4:00 p.m. The 4,000 square foot Splash Ground area at Play Park, air conditioned buildings, fans and cool treats offered at the various mobiles, restaurants and cafés will help keep guests cool throughout the day.

Thursday, Aug. 11 – Sweet Pete’s 1st Candy Art Show will feature artwork from more than 11 local artists from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The free event will highlight artwork with a candy and/or Jacksonville landmarks theme. Satisfy your sweet tooth with candy, chocolate samples, cotton candy and chocolate martinis while browsing local art and enjoying live music from Fainted Places.

Thursday, Aug. 11 – Enjoy fine foods and fine art courtesy of Green Man Gourmet and The Avondale Gallery from 6 to 9 p.m. at their Shoppes of Avondale locations. The joint event will feature talented jazz musicians from the Ronan School of music, wine tasting, art displays, and food samples to enjoy.
