A Cure for the “Nothing to Do” Blues

September 9th, 2011 · Leave a Comment

Still think there’s never anything fun or unique going on in Northeast Florida? Well, check out these interesting events going on this week!

Saturday, Sept. 10 – Join the Travis Manion Foundation and run to honor our nation’s heroes at the 2011 9/11 Heroes Run. The event will unite communities throughout the country to remember the sacrifices of all of the Heroes of September 11th – veteran, first responder, and civilian. Honor the fallen by challenging the living. Volunteer, Run, or just come out and watch – it promises to be a great time. The race starts at 6 p.m. from the Veterans Memorial Wall and entry fees are $25 for the 5K and $15 for the Mile Fun Run.

Saturday, Sept. 10 & Sunday, Sept. 11 – The Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary is hosting a two-day fundraising event from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. each day. Come and enjoy a leisurely stroll and guided tour through the sanctuary to meet all the residents, including Siberian tigers, lions, cougars, spotted and black leopards, a serval, two coatimundis and two arctic foxes.  Admission is $10 for 12 years old and up. Children 3-11 are $5 and 2 years and under are free.  Bring all your family and friends out to see these big, beautiful cats!

Tuesday, Sept. 13The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens will host a community opening for the new ONE in THREE exhibition from 4 to 8 p.m. The exhibit lifts the faces and stories of 20 current and former Duval County Public School students through dramatic portraits by photographer Ingrid Damiani. Their stories demonstrate the power of an engaged community that works ONE by ONE to ensure that all students are successful in school. They show the need for every person in our city to get involved in public education. In their eyes, you will find no despair—only hope. Admission to the museum is free for this event, and every Tuesday evening, courtesy of THE PLAYERS.

Thursday, Sept. 15 – You won’t want to run this Stop Light…Party! The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Stop Light Party is taking over Fionn MacCool’s upstairs for an evening of drinks, appetizers, mingling, raffles and a surprise! Your dress is your status, so singles should wear green, those in an “it’s complicated” situation can wear yellow and red means you’re taken. This event is not just for singles, so bring your better half for a great night out and help a good cause while having a good time. Tickets are $10 pre-sale or $15 at door and include your first drink and appetizers.

Thursday, Sept. 15 – What’s better than an ice cold beer at the end of a long, hot summer day? Well, how about a whole bunch of ice cold beers and plates of tasty pub grub. Jacksonville Magazine is launching a new local tradition by hosting the inaugural Northeast Florida Beer Cup at The Florida Theatre. The new fundraiser features the region’s top craft brewers competing in a variety of tasting categories. Plus, there will be live music by Grandpa’s Cough Medicine and favorite area pubs will be serving up delicious eats. If you’re a beer lover, this event will be a little slice of heaven. The event starts 6:30 p.m. and tickets are $35 (Advance); $40 (Day of Event); $120 (Group of 4).
