Amelia River Cruises’ Jekyll Island Discovery Tour Highlights Rich History of the Area

September 28th, 2011 · Leave a Comment

Amelia River Cruises invites guests to visit the Jekyll Island Club Hotel and arrive by boat, much like the club members did a century ago. The Jekyll Island Discovery Tour departs from Fernandina Harbor Marina at 8 a.m. on Oct. 13. The four-hour cruise along the entire western shoreline of Cumberland Island explores the lesser-traveled backwater creeks with views of what remains of the Carnegie mansions. Along the way, Captain Kevin McCarthy and his wife, Cecilia, share their personal family history, which is intertwined with the island’s history going back to the time of James Oglethorpe, who first brought Cecilia’s ancestors to the area in 1737.

The tour docks at Jekyll Island Club Hotel, the only four-star resort on Jekyll Island and a National Historic Landmark. Passengers will enjoy a gourmet lunch in the club’s Grand Dining Room, followed by a trolley tour of the grounds and cottages, and the opportunity for shopping. Guests then return to Fernandina Harbor Marina aboard a motor coach by 6:30 p.m.

Don’t miss the boat! Tickets are $120 per person and include snacks on-board, lunch at Jekyll Island and the trolley tour. Purchase tickets online at www.ameliarivercruises.com or call Lori Hoerl at (904) 321-7372.
