Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville (HabiJax) received a donation from both Ann and David Hicks and Delores and Wayne Weaver for $1 million dollars each, for a total of $2 million. The funds are lead gifts for HabiJax’s $16 million dollar campaign to revitalize New Town. The donation was recognized with a check presentation on Nov. 12 at HabiJax’s first fully furnished model home on Windle St.

In order to make a greater impact in Jacksonville neighborhoods, HabiJax is committing its experience, housing products and services to revitalizing the historic neighborhood of New Town. A capital campaign is underway with a goal of $16 million that will contribute to the building of at least 100 brand new homes to be built in New Town over the next three years. Qualified potential homeowners will also be offered an interest-free mortgage.

HabiJax has provided homeownership to more than 1,850 families since 1988. Combined with its other homeownership services, including Critical Home Repair, A Brush with Kindness, Weatherization, Rehabilitation and Housing Counseling, HabiJax has served over 7,500 families.

New Town’s location provides easy access to downtown, Southside, Mayport and the beaches. It is conveniently located near two public schools; Eugene Butler Middle School and SP Livingston Elementary School, as well as Edward Waters College, the oldest institution of higher education in Jacksonville. Success Park, a nearly 2-acre park and playground on the campus of Edward Waters College, also resides in the historical neighborhood of New Town, in addition to a number of shopping and dining opportunities with easy access to public transportation.

More information about HabiJax and how you can contribute to the New Town capital campaign is available online at www.habijax.org or by calling (904) 798-4529.
