Are You Conserving Water?

May 5th, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Former Pittsburg Mayor Tom Murphy was the keynote speaker at a recent ULI program titled “Infrastructure 2010: Investment Imperative with a focus on water – the hidden infrastructure problem.”

Are you conserving water? According to the program, here are the current challenges we face as a community:

  • We take our water for granted
  • Demand is outstripping supply
  • We have aging pipes
  • We fail to conserve
  • Pollution
  • We lose 6 billion gallons of water per day due to leaks
  • 14 metro cities are facing water challenges
  • St. Johns River is in trouble
  • The bottom line is we need to manage our water supply

Here are some lessons we can learn from Australia’s water conservation efforts:

  • Look at water as a lifestyle
  • Capture storm and rainwater
  • Recycle wastewater
  • Conserve
  • Plant crops that require less water and landscape appropriately
  • Utilize new irrigation methods
  • Moderate household consumption
  • Fix worn out pipes

Everyone can make a difference in conserving our valuable water. What are you doing? Tell us below and let’s all do our part!
