Business Leaders Seeking Winning Opportunities as Jacksonville Jaguars Play in London

October 23rd, 2013 · Leave a Comment

Northeast Florida’s presence in London extends well beyond the football matchup this weekend when the Jacksonville Jaguars take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Oct. 27, at Wembley Arena.

In addition to supporting the team, members of the Jacksonville business community also hope to score on an economic development level with the British business community.

A delegation of business community leaders, including representatives from the JAX Chamber and JAXUSA Partnership, are in London this week on an economic outreach mission. They hope to persuade British business leaders to expand or relocate in Northeast Florida.

“The Jaguar’s trip to London offers our business community an incredible opportunity to sell Jacksonville,” said Dan Dawson of the JAX Chamber.

The Northeast Florida delegation is meeting with about 20 British businesses this week. If all goes well, they will succeed in recruiting manufacturing business and other permanent jobs, while encouraging more international visitors to Jacksonville.

The delegation includes:

  • JAX Chamber President Daniel Davis
  • JAXUSA Partnership President Jerry Mallot
  • JAXUSA Partnership Senior Director Mike Breen
  • 2013 JAX Chamber Chair Greg Smith, market president, Bank of America Merrill Lynch
  • JAX Chamber Business Development Chair Fred Eliasson, senior vice president and CFO, CSX
  • JAXBIZ Chair Mike Hightower, senior vice president, Government and Legislative Affairs, Florida Blue
  • Former Jacksonville Mayor and 2014 Chamber Chair John Delaney, president of the University of North Florida
  • Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown
  • Jacksonville City Council President Bill Guilford
  • Jacksonville Office of Economic Development Executive Director Ted Carter

This year’s football game in London is the first of four to be played in four years in an agreement Jaguars owner Shad Khan made with the NFL. Khan has been instrumental in connecting the Jacksonville delegation with the London business community.

The Jaguars and the 49ers play at 1 p.m. EDT on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on the FOX television network.
