Community First Saturdays Kicks Off at Downtown Jacksonville Riverwalk

October 3rd, 2012 · Leave a Comment

This Saturday, Oct. 6, families, friends and four-legged favorites will gather at the Downtown Riverwalk to enjoy fun and fitness during the inaugural Community First Saturdays, the first event of its kind in Northeast Florida created and organized by the JAX Chamber.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month, visitors and residents alike will enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities, with new additions each month. Sponsored by Community First Credit Union, Community First Saturdays encourages people to rediscover and engage with Jacksonville’s city center and Downtown venues.

The event offers free fitness classes including yoga, tai chi and hula from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the Riverwalk directly behind the Times Union Center for the Performing Arts. JaxParks’ Art in the Park, also held behind the Times Union Center, will feature interactive art making with potter’s wheels, basket weaving and music until 4 p.m. Some of the bike activities include a bike valet and bike tours of art venues, high jump and long jump activities manned by members of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Filipino Pride celebration will host nearby activities and the best break dancers in town at the Jacksonville Landing. The Hyatt is hosting the Pink Ribbon Symposium, a free event featuring gold medal winner Peggy Fleming. Community First Credit Union will feature a car sale, with more than 300 new and pre-owned cars at reduced prices available from eight Jacksonville dealerships, at its corporate headquarters located at the corner of Beaver and Lee Streets. Community First will offer on-site financing at great low rates.

Even further east is “Community East,” which will feature food trucks, a café with craft beers and tables and chairs to enjoy the river view, open from 11 a.m. to dusk in the old courthouse parking lot.

The JTA Skyway will provide free service during the event to transport people to such locations as the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), the Jacksonville Public Library’s Main Library branch or the Museum of Science and History (MOSH). The water taxi will also be available, with stops at the nearby Riverside Arts Market and the Jacksonville Landing.
