Cynthia Gentry and Lewis Nelson

As they began looking for a new home, Cynthia Gentry and her husband, Lewis Nelson, discovered they desired different features. While both wanted to downsize and needed a neighborhood with a sense of community, Gentry preferred a residence that could be described as unique, historic and older while Nelson required a home that offered modern and low maintenance features. The couple found what they wanted and more at The John Gorrie a condominium.

“The John Gorrie provided the perfect compromise,” Gentry said. “It met all of the criteria we had for our new home.”

The couple recently relocated to Jacksonville from Cocoa Beach to be closer to Gentry’s sister and niece. When they began their search for a new home, her niece, who lives nearby in Riverside, suggested they visit The John Gorrie. The couple, along with their pet cat, Lucy, moved into a two-bedroom, two-bath residence in January.

“We loved it from the moment we saw it,” Gentry said. “There are so many things we enjoy living at The John Gorrie.”

Designed by distinguished Jacksonville architects Benjamin and Greeley, The John Gorrie a condominium reflects Mediterranean Revival architecture popular in the early 1920s. Inside, the residences feature 12-foot ceilings and expansive windows. Gentry was drawn to the residences’ original historic architectural elements such as exposed or painted brick walls while Nelson was pleased with the condominium’s modern luxuries including gourmet kitchens equipped with stainless steel appliances, CaesarStone countertops and hardwood floors.

“Our new home is lovely and filled with tons of sunlight,” Gentry said. “We were ready to downsize and we wanted a ‘lock and go’ lifestyle because we love to travel.”

Beyond the doors of their new home, they appreciate The John Gorrie’s onsite amenities and its sense of community. The couple enjoys living in a community with a variety of residents including professionals, families and retirees

Gentry and Nelson are equally enthusiastic about living in the condominium’s Riverside neighborhood. They enjoy living within walking distance of many popular restaurants and across the street from Bold Bean Coffee Roasters.

“Riverside is young, vibrant, walkable and beautiful,” Gentry said. “We love the Riverside neighborhood and we are very happy living here.”

The John Gorrie offers studios, one- and two-bedroom residences and two-story townhomes. The community’s amenities include a custom fitness center, a private courtyard, elevators, private gated parking and a resident reading room with Wi-Fi Internet access. The John Gorrie is within walking distance of neighborhood shops, restaurants and offices, residents are also in close proximity to the St. Johns River and a variety of beautiful parks.
