Design trends are a small way to make a big impact on your home.

Along with creating a look that beautifies, captivates and draws great appeal, Judith Sisler Johnston, president of Sisler Johnston Interior Design and allied member, ASID, believes stylish design expresses personality. It also makes a home more functional.

Some trends come and go, but many will gain momentum and remain as classics. Take a look at the newest design trends.

Fusion of Styles – Eclectic is now referred to as a fusion of styles, connecting the old with what’s new and fresh. Think contemporary chairs paired with rustic tables.

Natural Elements mixed with Contemporary Materials – One of the hottest trends is to incorporate the creative use of materials and elements into home design. Modern textures are being combined with Old World or classical materials, such as salvaged or reused wood and metals.

Gourmet Kitchens – Many homeowners are choosing upscale appliance packages, such as French door refrigerators and induction or commercial cook tops. The popular placement is flush with cabinets and adding cabinet panels or a brushed stainless finish with large, modern hardware. Counter height kitchen islands and bars are showing up in all styles of homes.

Cabinets, Countertops and Doors – White-on-white continues in popularity. Think white cabinets and white/grey marble, quartz or porcelain countertops. Weathered wood, charcoal and rich walnut are also popular. Architectural quality doors are not just for the front of the house. Craftsman, mission and barn door styles are making their way throughout the home. Most home buyers prefer eight-foot interior doors.

Spa Bathrooms – The bathroom as a spa trend continues with an emphasis on large, well-designed tubs with an increase in free-standing soaking tubs instead of jetted tubs.

Specialty Lighting – Specialty fixtures are lighting it up and many are being showcased as pieces of art. Lighting is being used as part of a geometric or flowing sculpture rather than just as a functional element.

Dynamic Color – Color can be a powerful force in a room or a home, and is the ultimate form of personal expression. Saturated deep sea blues create calming rooms or accents. Warm grey is also prevalent for use in weathered woods, charcoal glazes and paint color for walls. Area rugs that look like an artist’s canvas add design and color.

Relaxed Furnishings – Comfort is vital to today’s homeowners. Sectional sofas offer a more relaxed, less formal place for lounging. Upholstered linen beds and bedding provide cozy style.

Inspired Design – Often, the best inspiration for home design can be found in decorated builder model homes. Many of the above trends can be seen in ICI Homes’ models designed by Sisler Johnston Interior Design at Tamaya, Siena at Nocatee Town Center and Twenty Mile at Nocatee.
