It’s important to be counted in the Census!

April 12th, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau works to build an accurate count of the nation’s population, and the City of Jacksonville is partnering with the Bureau to increase local participation in this year’s count.

The Census count is important to communities like ours because it helps account for our city’s growth.

It also positions Jacksonville for federal funding that directly impacts residents. Every year, the federal government distributes more than $400 billion to state, local and tribal governments based on census data. Leaders use this data to guide planning decisions on where to build new roads, hospitals, childcare and senior centers and schools.

To date, more than 41 percent of the forms mailed to Jacksonville residents have been returned to the Census Bureau. It’s a great start, but there still is a long way to go.

Information shared with the Census Bureau is completely confidential and by law, the Bureau cannot share your answers with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities.

It’s not too late and it is important to Jacksonville to be counted.  Make sure you fill out your questionnaire and return it to the Census Bureau!
