January 8th, 2010 · Leave a Comment

If you weren’t in attendance this morning, you missed out on an energizing and commemorative event as the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The 23 Annual MLK Jr. Breakfast at the Prime Osborn Convention Center started this morning at 7:30 a.m. and more than 1,200 people were in attendance.

Rodney Hurst

The highlight of the event was keynote speaker Rodney L. Hurst Sr., author of “It Was Never About a Hot Dog and a CokeTM: A Personal Account of the 1960 Sit-in Demonstrations in Jacksonville, Florida and Ax Handle Saturday.” Hurst spoke about his sit-in experiences in Jacksonville during the 50s and 60s and about what still needs to be done today to improve race relations in Jacksonville.

Other speakers at the event this morning included Mayor John Peyton, President of the NAACP Jacksonville Branch Isaiah Rumlin and Mrs. Willye Dennis, former president of the NAACP and founder of the breakfast event. During the event, JCCI also released its 2009 Race Relations Progress Report.

More information about the event is available here. Thanks to all who came out to celebrate the life and ongoing achievements of Dr. King. And remember, we can all celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 18.
