The JAX Chamber’s 33rd annual Leadership Trip to Charlotte, N.C., with the theme “Investing for Growth,” focused on how Charlotte’s top community leaders addressed their city’s economic opportunities and challenges. Topics included public/private partnerships, downtown revitalization, sports marketing and education.

More than 135 trip attendees met with Charlotte Chamber of Commerce leaders, city leaders including, Charlotte Mayor Patsy Kinsey, economic development executives and area business leaders.

The Leadership Trip took place during the JAX Chamber’s Financial Services Industry Weeks, providing delegates with the opportunity to examine the success of Charlotte’s financial services. Charlotte is a major U.S. financial center, second only to New York City. The greater Charlotte region serves as headquarters to numerous national and international companies including Bank of America, Compass Group USA, Lending Tree and Wells Fargo East Coast operations center.

Speakers discussed public/private partnerships, downtown development, sports marketing and recent educational initiatives. Participants toured the Levine Center for the Arts, which began development as a public-private partnership between the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, The Leon Levine Foundation and Wachovia Corporation, now Wells Fargo. It now serves as one of Charlotte’s premier cultural destinations.

Professional and recreational sports are also an integral part of the Charlotte community. Trip attendees visited the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the U.S. National Whitewater Center, and viewed presentations from representatives of Charlotte’s professional sports franchises. During the trip the group experienced the Charlotte Area Transit Systems, which oversees the city’s streetcar, trolley and light-rail systems and have transformed the city’s urban life. Finally, attendees learned about Project L.I.F.T. and its accomplishments in improving educational achievement and graduation rates.

“Charlotte’s leaders have taken on complex projects and achieved impressive results,” said JAX Chamber President & CEO Daniel Davis. “We are returning from the Leadership Trip with new ideas and information that will help us develop and implement dynamic economic development initiatives and lead our region to a more prosperous future.”
