Protecting Children Online and Off at REAL WORLD SAFETY Conference Oct. 1

Bullying, both online and off, will be discussed at the first annual REAL WORLD SAFETY Conference at the University of North Florida on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hosted by The Monique Burr Foundation for Children, Inc, the conference is targeted towards parents, concerned citizens and professionals from all disciplines.  Renowned experts will discuss safety challenges facing today’s youth and attendees will learn real world strategies to protect children and youth from bullying and cyberbullying. Youth are encouraged to attend with parents.

The conference will include three guest speakers:

  • Michele Borba—An internationally recognized expert and author on children, teens, parenting, bullying and moral development. Borba is the author of UnSelfie; Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About Me World.
  • Sameer Hinduja—Recognized internationally for his groundbreaking work on the subjects of cyberbullying and safe social networking, concerns that have paralleled the exponential growth in online communication by young people.
  • Richard Guerry—From the Institute for Responsible Online and Cell-Phone Communication (IROC2 ), a non-profit dedicated to teaching digital safety, responsibility and awareness. He is also the author of multiple cyber safety and citizenship books, including Public and Permanent, which is used by students, parents and teachers as a guide to digital citizenship.
