In the 1920s, a Mediterranean revival took place in Jacksonville with the planning of an expansive community called San Jose Estates. Featuring Mediterranean architecture and described as “a bit of Old Spain in new world,” the development called for hotels, a river esplanade, shopping centers, a golf and country club, parks, schools and hundreds of homes.

Unfortunately, a real estate bust that soon followed caused the development to fall apart and it was never completed. Yet there are approximately 30 buildings that were built during that time with the signature Mediterranean look – including homes and what today is San Jose Episcopal Church and Day School, San Jose Country Club and parts of The Bolles School. The former DuPont estate, now Epping Forest Yacht Club, was also designed with this signature look. These buildings remain scattered around the San Jose area of Jacksonville, and many are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This rich history and gorgeous Mediterranean Revival style inspired the new condominium community of The Palazzo on St. Johns. Centrally located in the San Jose/Baymeadows area of the city, The Palazzo’s red tile roof, stucco exteriors and fine architectural detailing recall Jacksonville’s early days.

“The Mediterranean style chosen for The Palazzo, and which is still found throughout the city today, has been designed to pay homage to Jacksonville’s past, while offering a seamless blend with modern amenities for a completely current lifestyle,” said Mike Bugg, The Condo Group Florida, powered by RE/MAX WaterMarke. “The area in which The Palazzo is located is extremely popular and is convenient to all other parts of Jacksonville, whether it is downtown, the Beaches, Mandarin or the other side of the St. Johns River.”

Three-bedroom homes at The Palazzo on St. Johns start in the low $400,000s and include up to 1,972 square feet of total living space. Four-bedroom homes start at $439,900 and include up to 2,541 square feet of total living space.

Residences feature private elevators, hand-scraped wood floors, nine-foot ceilings, gas fireplaces and luxury kitchen and bath finishes. Each residence offers breathtaking waterfront vistas and preserve views from peaceful covered lanais.
