What’s Happening in Northeast Florida

January 31st, 2014 · Leave a Comment

So, it’s Super Bowl Sunday. But what if you don’t like football? And what are you supposed to do the rest of the weekend.

Here’s a few ideas:

How about a little basketball? The Jacksonville Giants – the area’s entry in the American Basketball Association (ABA) – tip off against the Fayetteville Flight at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Veterans Memorial Arena.

The Giants are 17-1 – having scored 180 points in a game earlier this year – and might be contending for another ABA crown.

Ticket information is available on the Giants website.

OK, so you’re not a fan of classical music. That doesn’t mean you can’t be a fan of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.

On Saturday, Feb. 1, the symphony teams up with Zebra’s Randy Jackson and his rock band to perform the music of Pink Floyd, the legendary rock band perhaps best known for its “Dark Side of the Moon” album.

The performance begins at 8 p.m., and tickets are still available.

Shine on!

Earlier Saturday, you might be looking for something more low-key. So check out Community First Saturdays!, which have returned Downtown to offering family-friendly activities as well as food beginning at noon.

Held the first Saturday of each month, the event includes yoga, tai chi and other fitness classes along the river. With ample free parking, participants are also encouraged to arrive on the Northbank via boat and bike to also enjoy food trucks, craft beer and tours.

Finally, you’ve watched 20 to 30 hours of Super Bowl pre-game and your brain needs a break from the Xs and Os.

Why not visit the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville (MOCA) on Sunday, Feb. 2, between noon and 4 p.m. for the Sunday ArtFusion – Science and Art program.

It’s a weekly family event free with admission that provides a creative and inspiring outlet for children to work with their parents and caregivers.

Details are on MOCA’s website.
