What’s New in 2013 Interior Design Trends

January 22nd, 2013 · Leave a Comment

Each year brings fresh and innovative designs to styles and colors. This year is all about color and function. Here are some of the top interior design trends for the home from Sisler Johnston Interior Design.

Color Trends:  Bright, bold hues dominate the latest color palettes. The 2013 color of the year is Emerald and the influential color of the year is Monaco Blue. Color evokes emotion and jewel tones, often associated with precious stones of lasting value, offer comfort and security. In addition to seeing a lot of blues and greens in home design, grey is becoming the new beige. The neutral palette of creamy beige and warm gold hues is giving away to pewter, stainless and charcoal tones. These current color trends were very popular in the early 1980s, and while colors and styles come and go, it is not uncommon for trends to reinvent themselves every 20 to 30 years.

Comfort and Style:  Like colors, home furnishings follow trends and often reflect the economic times. Currently, the range of styling for the home is wide open from contemporary to traditional and everything in between. There is a trend toward more relaxed, comfortable furnishings and a more minimal approach for many reasons. More and more people are working from home and many families have multiple generations living under one roof.

Aging in Place:  Most Baby Boomers recognize their homes may need design modifications as they mature. Aging-in-Place is a concept that allows homeowners to grow older with their homes. With Aging-in-Place fundamentals, like accessible design, the home is modified so residents can continue to live in their home safely, independently and comfortably as they age and their personal needs changes.

Accessible design ensures safety along with style. Safety features, such as hand rails in a variety of materials, finishes and styles installed by stairways or in the bathroom near the tub, water closet and shower, meet the demand for both design and function. Aging-in-Place modifications can be made in every room of the home from simple improvements, such as better lighting, to extensive remodeling, such as installing an elevator in the home.
