Young Professional Finds One-of-a-Kind Home at The John Gorrie a condominium

November 17th, 2014 · Leave a Comment

When Jacksonville professional Chris Caric began looking for a home in Jacksonville, he knew he wanted to live in Riverside. After searching on the Internet and visiting several properties, he found what he wanted and more at The John Gorrie a condominium.

“The John Gorrie is a great place to live,” said Caric, who moved into his home last year. “There is truly nothing else like it in Riverside.”

Caric, an account representative at the Stella-Jones Corporation, found great appeal in The John Gorrie’s modern conveniences complemented by a historic setting.

Designed by renowned Jacksonville architects Benjamin and Greeley, the building originally was built as the John Gorrie Junior High School. Its ornate design reflects Mediterranean Revival architecture popular in the early 1920s.

The John Gorrie’s owners, J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver, purchased the former junior high school in 2009. Delores Weaver completed an extensive renovation and restoration in 2011 to transform the historic landmark school into 68 residences with luxurious contemporary amenities. The building and many of the residences include elements from its former use as a school.

“With its benches and bookshelves, you feel as though you are walking into an active school,” Caric said. “The John Gorrie is very welcoming.”

During his initial visit, Caric liked the 12-foot ceilings, expansive windows and the plentiful amount of natural light in the condominium. He was also impressed by the residences’ brand new interiors which include stainless steel GE appliances, CaesarStone countertops and hardwood floors. He purchased a one-bedroom residence that opens directly to the community’s private courtyard.

“The courtyard is one of my favorite spots,” Caric said. “The landscaping is beautiful and it’s right outside my back door. It is a wonderful place to sit and relax.”

Most of all, Caric appreciates the community’s location.

“The John Gorrie has an excellent location,” Caric said. “Everything is in walking distance – 5 Points, King Street, great local restaurants, Publix and the Riverside Arts Market, which I go to most Saturdays. My work is in downtown Jacksonville so it’s very convenient.”

The John Gorrie offers studios, one- and two-bedroom residences and two-story townhomes priced from the mid-$100,000s. Amenities include a custom fitness center, a private courtyard, elevators, private gated parking and a resident reading room with Wi-Fi Internet access. Owners at The John Gorrie a condominium receive an ad valorem tax abatement toward their homeowner’s tax bill through 2021.
