Leadership Jacksonville announces Frederick H. Schultz, prominent Jacksonville civic leader who worked tirelessly to strengthen the community through education, will be the feature of the next video in its Jacksonville Legacy Series, an ongoing video series showcasing some of the region’s most prominent leaders who positively impact the First Coast community. The video will air on WJCT at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9.

Produced by Lindsey Films, the third installment of the video series spotlights Schultz’s legacy as a dedicated public servant. Schultz served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1963 to 1970, severing as Speaker for the last two years. During his time in the House, he was instrumental in in bringing the University of North Florida and Florida Junior College (now Florida State College at Jacksonville) to the region.

In 1976, Schultz became chairman of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce where, among other things, he hosted the now famous, Amelia Island Conference. This led to the creation of both Leadership Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Community Council. Over a 45-year period, he received numerous awards from the Chamber including the Junior Chamber’s Outstanding Young Man Award in 1964, the Good Government Award in 1969 and the full Chamber’s Distinguished Citizen’s Award in 1996. He was also the first recipient of Leadership Jacksonville’s Lifetime Achievement Award which is now known as the Frederick H. Schultz Lifetime Achievement Award.

From 1979 to 1982, he served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Federal Reserve System. In addition, he served as Chairman of the Florida Institute of Education from 1983 to 1987.

In 1997, a group of concerned citizens, educators and business leaders charted a course for education reform in Jacksonville. Inspired by a $1 million dollar grant from Schultz, the Schultz Center for Teaching and Leadership was created through state matched grants and locally raised private donations and opened its doors in February 2002.
