JAX Chamber Announces 2013 Industry Weeks, Chamber and Community Leaders to Tour Region’s Targeted Industries

The JAX Chamber announces the launch of 2013 Industry Weeks. Beginning Monday, Aug. 12, Chamber President and CEO Daniel Davis and community leaders will embark on a seven-week tour of companies and corporations, visiting numerous businesses in Northeast Florida that make up the region’s targeted industries.

“Industry Weeks celebrate the business assets in our region that mean so much to our economy and quality of life,” said JAX Chamber Chair and Northeast Florida Market President of Bank of America Merrill Lynch Greg Smith. “The success we have seen in the businesses within Northeast Florida’s targeted industries speaks directly to the economic advantages and opportunities that exist in our region.”

The Industry Weeks schedule runs through Friday, Sept. 27. Each week, the schedule is designed for community leaders to visit numerous businesses within one of the region’s targeted industries. The community can follow the company tours and Industry Weeks on Twitter and Facebook.

The following highlights the dates, the industry focus for each week and some of the companies and businesses that will be visited.

Aug. 12-16 Information Technology – More than 15,000 highly-skilled workers are employed in IT positions throughout the region including companies such as Web.com, iMethods, TEKsystems, Colo5, The Building IT Company, Quad Nova and Hashrocket.

Aug. 19-23 Advanced Manufacturing – With a skilled, highly trained workforce and Class A industrial park facilities, the region is a Florida leader for percentage of labor force engaged in advanced manufacturing. Companies and organizations include Pilot Pen Corporation of America, Swisher International, University of North Florida-Engineering, SAFT, Biomet Microfixation LLC, Arizona Chemical and BAE Systems.

Aug. 26-30 Logistics – With accessibility to the entire Southeast market within an eight-hour drive, the region features a strong transportation infrastructure system and the potential for increased international trade with the support of JAXPORT, CSX Transportation, Suddath Relocation, Coach Inc. and Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations.

Sept. 2-6 Aviation and Aerospace – More than 7,000 highly skilled workers are employed in aviation and aerospace jobs, and the region is home to the largest industrial air park in the Southeast, Cecil Commerce Center. Other businesses and organizations include Flightstar, FSCJ Aviation Center, Embraer, Northrop Grumman, KAMAN Aerospace, Unison and Jacksonville International Airport.

Sept. 9-13 Military – The military is a significant contributor to the local economy and the region’s largest employer. Military veterans make up 14 percent of the area’s workforce, compared to 7 percent for the U.S. overall. The region is home to NAS Jacksonville, Fleet Readiness Center Southeast (FRCSE), The Air National Guard, The Marine Corp Blount Island, The U.S. Coast Guard Mayport and NAS Mayport.

Sept. 16-20 Financial Services – More than 60,000 people are employed in Jacksonville’s financial services industry at companies such as Fidelity Investments, Fidelity National Financial, BB&T, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Fidelity, Wells Fargo, Citi, SunTrust, EverBank and Deutsche Bank.

Sept. 23-27 Health and Life Sciences – The region is home to Mayo Clinic Florida, one of only three in the nation, and the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute, one of only seven in the U.S. for cancer treatment. One in every six jobs in Northeast Florida is in the Health and Life Sciences sector at companies, including The Mayo Clinic, University of Florida Health, Baptist Health Systems, St. Vincent’s HealthCare, Vistakon and Medtronic.

In addition, Jacksonville is home to seven Fortune 1000 and four Fortune 500 company headquarters, more than any other city in Florida. More than 80 local companies have national or divisional headquarters in Northeast Florida.
