Leadership Jacksonville Hosts ONE by ONE Program with Jacksonville Public Education Fund

January 12th, 2012 · Leave a Comment

Leadership Jacksonville, a program that develops youth and adult leaders in Northeast Florida, recently partnered with the Jacksonville Public Education Fund (JPEF) to host a ONE by ONE program. The ONE by ONE campaign is an unprecedented, city-wide initiative to bring together thousands of people in Jacksonville to create a shared vision for public education and work to make that vision a reality. Through structured discussions, such as the one hosted by Leadership Jacksonville, ONE by ONE aims to identify the priorities of the community and turn them into an action plan.

The ONE by ONE program hosted at Leadership Jacksonville included approximately 50 attendees who were divided up into groups to discuss five major topics in each group, including: Aspirations for Jacksonville; Aspirations for Our Schools; What Our Schools Look Like Today; What Needs to Happen; and Reflections from the Conversations. Each group was facilitated by a member of the community, directed by a volunteer Community Advisory Team, and transcribed by students who are involved in the Youth Leadership Jacksonville program. Participants in each group noted several issues that would make Duval County public schools more successful, including the need for more mentors and mentoring programs, community involvement, financial needs in the public school system, increased graduation rates, and the need for open discussions among students and the community.

This is the third ONE by ONE program Leadership Jacksonville has participated in during the last several months. In December, 16 members of Youth Leadership Jacksonville facilitated and transcribed an all-student conversation hosted by JPEF. Also in December, 43 Collegiate Leadership Experience participants and Youth Leadership Jacksonville alumni gathered to participate in a ONE by ONE program, which included lively and engaging discussions.

The ONE by ONE campaign was launched in 2011 to provide a vehicle to re-engage the Jacksonville community on the issue of education. According to ONE by ONE, study after study shows that better public education is key to a successful economy – cutting the drop-out rate of high school students in half would add $65 million to the gross regional product. The outcome of the ONE by ONE campaign will be an action plan created from the community discussions that shares responsibility between the schools and community, and to create teams to carry out its details. JPEF hopes the ONE by ONE campaign will lead to progress in schools, better outcomes for children and a brighter future for Jacksonville.
