THE PLAYERS week has been filled with activities that highlight the “good side of sports,” most notably, a commitment to honoring the men and women who serve in the U.S. Military.  This tradition continues through THE PLAYERS annual Military Appreciation Day, where country music sensation, avid golfer and philanthropist Darius Rucker helped the tournament honor area military with a special musical appearance.

Rucker was part of a ceremony during Military Appreciation Day to salute America’s heroes. The program on TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse Lawn included pageantry by military personnel, the National Anthem performed by the 82nd Airborne All-American Chorus from Ft. Bragg (N.C.) and a flyover, as well as remarks from PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem and PGA TOUR player Jim Furyk. Rucker closed the program with a special musical performance dedicated to the military and their families.

Military Appreciation Day Ceremony at THE PLAYERS Championship also included a surprise presentation of mortgage-free homes to two Wounded Warriors, Lance Corporal Anthony Sayo, (USMC-Ret) and Sgt. Nate Helmuth, (USMC-Ret),  thanks to the Military Warriors Support Foundation.

Throughout tournament week, all active duty, reserve and retired military personnel and their dependents have access to the Patriots’ Outpost, which offers complimentary food, beverages and activities.  The Patriots’ Outpost gives military members the chance to be treated like a “high roller” at one of the world’s premier sporting events – free of charge.  The Outpost, located on the hill between No. 16 and No. 18 fairways, is financially supported by Jacksonville-area companies and individuals.  The Patriots’ Outpost was officially open at 11 a.m. on Military Appreciation Day.
