Jacksonville is a tremendous city for architecture buffs. Historic and iconic mid-century modern architecture abounds throughout the River City including the enduring designs of architect Robert Broward.

Broward’s prolific and distinguished career began as an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright. During his career, he produced a legacy of outstanding architecture including the Unitarian Universalist Church of Jacksonville in Arlington. Broward’s love of nature inspired his architectural philosophy that buildings should be a part of the environment, not infringe upon it.

Broward’s contributions influenced many careers and his work has touched many others including his grandson, Hampton Barnes. The Jacksonville native recently bought a new home at another one of city’s architectural gems, The John Gorrie a condominium.

“My grandfather’s work helped me to develop an understanding and appreciation for architecture and adaptive reuse,” Barnes said. “What the Weavers have done with The John Gorrie – transforming a historic school into a condominium – is awesome.”

Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver, owners of The John Gorrie a condominium, purchased the former John Gorrie Junior High School in 2009. Barr Weaver immediately had another job when she undertook the building’s extensive renovation and restoration, transforming the historic landmark school into luxury residences. The former school was designed by distinguished Jacksonville architects Benjamin and Greeley, and its ornate design reflects Mediterranean Revival architecture popular in the early 1920s.

The historic renovation, which was completed in 2011, blends architectural preservation with modern conveniences. Residents of The John Gorrie a condominium enjoy 12-foot ceilings, expansive windows and contemporary features such as hardwood floors and kitchens equipped with stainless steel appliances and CaesarStone countertops.

Barnes and his dog, Pepper, a black Labrador mix, recently moved into a one-bedroom residence at The John Gorrie. His new home overlooks the community’s courtyard and he looks forward to taking Pepper to The John Gorrie Dog Park when it opens later this year.

“The John Gorrie is located in the heart of the city and in an area where I enjoy being on the weekends,” Barnes said. “The area surrounding the condominium offers so much to do. I love going to restaurants and there are many great ones nearby including 13 Gypsies and Tres Leches, which are both across the street. Plus, I am within walking or biking distance of Five Points, Avondale and King Street.”
