With school starting next week, summer is officially drawing to a close, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had! Here are this week’s unique events happening in Northeast Florida.

August 15 – August 28Downtown Vision, Inc. is dishing out exquisite cuisine at an affordable price during the fifth annual Eat Up Downtown, Downtown Jacksonville’s dining promotion, which runs for two weeks. Each participating restaurant offers specially selected, three-course dinner menus for $25 per person. There are no coupons to clip or tickets to buy, simply view the menus online, select your favorite and call the restaurant for reservations.

Saturday, Aug. 20 – Join Jazoo and friends at the Jacksonville Zoo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to celebrate his birthday and the upcoming school year.  There will be cookies (while supplies last), courtesy of Sam’s Club, birthday games, music, prize drawings, a giant water slide on the Great Lawn and more!  Be sure to visit Jazoo’s real lion friends at 1:00 p.m. at the lion exhibit where they will enjoy a treat to celebrate with Jazoo! Admission to Stingray Bay will be free with park admission all day as Jazoo’s gift to you.

Saturday, Aug. 20 – The inaugural Back2School Beach Fest will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Augustine Beach and St. Augustine Amphitheatre. This free, family-friendly community event will promote clean beaches, healthy lifestyles and a fun day at the beach before kids head back to school. Activities include free surfing lessons, one-mile fun run, environmental education booths, local arts and crafts vendors, a bounce house and interactive kids’ activities. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre will also have series of movie screenings starting at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 25 – You’ve seen them around town; now make one of your very own. MOSH has partnered with St. Johns Riverkeeper for a Rain Barrel Workshop. Participants will take a hands-on approach to water conservation by learning about ways to keep our river healthy and by making their own rain barrel to take home with them. The workshop, which is from 6 to 8 p.m., is $55 per rain barrel and registration for one; additional guests are $5. Register online or call (904) 396-MOSH, ext. 230.
