Six months ago, Jacksonville professional Milan Velimirovic began thinking about buying a new home. Although he owned a home in the Southside area, the architect and Keiser University computer instructor frequently visited the neighborhoods of Riverside and Avondale. It wasn’t long ago – less than two decades, in fact – that hundreds of students were receiving an education at John Gorrie Junior High School in the Riverside neighborhood. Named after famous Floridian Dr. John Gorrie, the inventor of air conditioning and the first ice machine, the John Gorrie school opened its doors in 1923 and permanently closed them to students in 1997.
