Now FHA and Fannie Mae-financing approved, The John Gorrie offers one- and two-bedroom residences and two-story townhomes priced from the mid-$100,000s to $300,000s.

Jacksonville community advocates J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver purchased the former John Gorrie Junior High School in Riverside with plans to renovate and restore the historic buildings, transforming them into what is now The John Gorrie a condominium.

Designed by noted Jacksonville architects Roy A. Benjamin and Mellen C. Greeley, John Gorrie Junior High School was constructed in 1923, as reflected by its ornate Mediterranean Revival architecture characteristics popular during that time. The school was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 before closing in 1997, and after Weaver’s meticulous renovation, it now consists of 68 residences with luxurious contemporary amenities including 12-foot ceilings, expansive windows, stainless steel GE appliances, CaesarStone countertops and hardwood floors.

The historic landmark condominium is more than 65 percent sold and has received its Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and Fannie Mae (FNMA) approval, making it possible for qualified homebuyers to obtain low down payment, fixed-rate mortgages at competitive rates. Owners at The John Gorrie a condominium receive an ad valorem tax abatement toward their homeowner’s tax bill through 2021.

The John Gorrie is home to young professionals, retirees and families alike, in addition to being a pet-friendly condominium.

“Owners within The John Gorrie are proud of their homes and embrace the historical significance of the building, its unique charm, and the growth of the surrounding community,” said Delores Barr Weaver, owner of The John Gorrie a condominium. “They appreciate the number of conveniences accessible by foot, which is unique in a city as widespread as Jacksonville.”

The John Gorrie offers one- and two-bedroom residences and two-story townhomes priced from the mid-$100,000s. Amenities include a custom fitness center, a private courtyard, elevators, private gated parking and a resident reading room with Wi-Fi Internet access. Residents are also in close proximity to the St. Johns River and a variety of beautiful parks, restaurants, boutiques and the newly opened Fresh Market.

“Restoring the John Gorrie Junior High School and converting it into The John Gorrie a condominium has been an exciting and rewarding process and I am delighted with what it has become,” said Weaver.
