The John Gorrie a condominium, the former school and historic landmark that was meticulously restored and renovated into condominiums and townhomes, invites guests to tour several of its unique homes during the 38th annual Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) Spring Tour of Homes. The two-day, self-guided tour will be April 21 and 22 and features more than 15 historic homes throughout Riverside Avondale. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 during the Home Tour weekend, and can be purchased online here.
Visitors on the tour will have the chance to look inside several of the new homes for sale at The John Gorrie a condominium, which features 68 residences including studios, one and two-bedroom condominiums, and two-story townhomes ranging in size from 800 square feet to 1,800 square feet. Many of the floor plans feature distinctive layouts based on the original classrooms. The former principal’s office now serves as a reading room for residents, adorned with refinished cabinets from the school, a pedestal from a former bird bath provided by the June 1926 class, as well as concrete benches donated by the 1929 class of students. The hallways display original windows and doors, chalkboards, radiators and a teachers’ mail cubby.
Located at 2525 College St., The John Gorrie a condominium is within walking distance of Riverside Avondale’s cozy neighborhood restaurants, local boutiques and charming storefronts. Residents also enjoy close proximity to the banks of the St. Johns River, oak-canopied streets and a sampling of the area’s most marvelously maintained parks. The community is minutes from downtown Jacksonville, cultural landmarks such as The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens and national sporting venues.
