The Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida’s 2023 Nonprofit Compensation and Benefits Report has been published; an executive summary can be found at nonprofitctr.org/research-resources/research.

The Nonprofit Center regularly surveys the local nonprofit business community to provide up-to-date nonprofit compensation and benefits practices in the Northeast Florida region. The 2023 Nonprofit Compensation and Benefits Report is made possible by the generous support of First Horizon Bank and The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida.

The 2023 survey and report capture changes to the nonprofit labor market since the global pandemic and high inflation disrupted the employment landscape. Nonprofit leaders are encouraged to use the data in the report to bolster recruitment and staff retention, benchmark salary and benefit data, improve equitable practices, and make the case for greater investment in human capital that increases organizational effectiveness.

Eighty-six eligible nonprofit organizations that employ over 6,000 people completed the survey. Key take-aways from the survey:

  • The median pay for non-executive employees increased from $35,000 in 2020 to $40,000 in 2023, an increase that does not keep pace with the 18% inflation during the same time period.
  • 14% of sector leadership is reported to be Black, Indigenous, or Persons of Color, a fractional increase over prior years despite nearly three-quarters of surveyed organizations reporting they are working on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • 32% of nonprofits expect a leadership transition in the next 3 years. A majority report having a succession plan.
  • 96% of organizations anticipate growing their staff or staying at level staffing. However, more than half are having trouble hiring or retaining employees.

According to the Nonprofit Center’s 2020 Public Perceptions Poll, 72% of community members believe that working for a nonprofit is a valuable and worthwhile career path. To view open vacancies in the nonprofit workforce, visit nonprofitctr.org/nw-opportunities.
