August 17th, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Jacksonville Today has been named a finalist in the Online News Association’s Online Journalism Awards (Excellence in Newsletters – Single Newsletter) and the Local Independent Online News Publishers’ (LION) Local Journalism Awards (Product of the Year). The recognition follows another national award from the Local Media Association for Best Local Newsletter/Email Strategy in June.

The Online News Association selected Jacksonville Today as a finalist alongside four national and international newsrooms in the Excellence in Newsletters category.  ONA is the world’s largest digital news association, with a mission to inspire and support innovation and excellence in digital journalism.

The LION Local Journalism Awards’ Product of the Year recognizes newsrooms that developed a successful and creative short-term or long-term product to strengthen their journalistic impact, financial health and/or operational resilience. LION Publishers is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to helping independent news publishers build more sustainable businesses. The winner will be announced on October 3, 2023.

“We’re gratified by this national recognition because it shows that Jacksonville Today’s  work to build a sustainable nonpartisan digital-first local news service is being noticed across the country — but it is the feedback we get from Jacksonville  Today readers each and every day that truly sustains us,” said David McGowan, CEO of Jacksonville Today parent organization WJCT Public Media.

Jacksonville Today launched in October 2021 as a newsletter that helps readers stay informed, get involved in their community and become more civically engaged — all in a succinct package delivered to their inbox at 6 a.m. Monday through Friday. As of August 2023, the newsletter reaches more than 19,600 subscribers.

Jacksonville Today is supported by individuals, corporations and foundations with an interest in the vital role local journalism plays in civic life. Sign up to receive the newsletter at jaxtoday.org/signup.
