As 2011 draws to a close, it’s a good time to look back and reflect upon the progress and accomplishments of the Northeast Florida business community.
Thanks to the JAX Chamber’s comprehensive commitment to economic development, the organization and its economic development division, JAXUSA Partnership, helped strengthen the region’s position as America’s Logistics Center, creating more than 2,300 new high-paying jobs in the region, and fostering small business growth in 2011.
Consistent with its strategic plan, the Chamber is committed to job creation, operational excellence and member relations, and public policy. All departments and divisions within the organization are working to achieve success in each area.
The Chamber’s Public Policy and Business Development divisions were engaged in port improvement initiatives that made great strides this year. Chamber members showed their unwavering support of a remedy to the Mile Point navigational hazard by attending the Army Corps of Engineers’ (Corps) public workshop and submitting innumerable letters of support. The Corps’ hearing last week to review the project recommendation is yet another milestone to achieving the growth that will result from the proposed Mile Point improvement.
The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded a $10 million “TIGER III” grant for an intermodal container transfer facility at Dames Point. The intermodal container transfer facility will enable containerized cargo to be transported more efficiently from ships to rail cars at Dames Point, benefitting the TraPac container terminal.
The grand opening of the new Keystone port terminal, with Vulcan Materials as the first tenant, represents a $150 million capital investment and will add 200 new jobs.
These are only a few of the accomplishments by the JAX Chamber and JAXUSA Partnership to drive quality economic growth to the Northeast Florida region. More information on other achievements is available here. We look forward to see what 2012 has in store!
